It’s hard to believe that the first day of school is only a few weeks away! As we look forward to the exciting kick-off to the 2024-25 school year, we wanted to provide a reminder about the district’s policy around technology and the use of devices during the school day.
Our school board has had a policy limiting the use of telecommunication devices by students since 2001. Below you can find more information about expectations for students in elementary, middle, and high school. You are your students’ first, best teacher and we want to work together to help develop healthy habits around using technology and social media. By understanding and supporting these policies as families, caregivers, and schools, we can help our young people learn and thrive.
For elementary and middle school students:
Devices are to be turned off and put away from the time the student arrives on campus until school is dismissed for the day. Cell phones, smart watches, and headphones should not be seen or used at all during those times.
For high school students:
Devices are to be turned off and put away during all instructional time throughout the school day. Cell phones, smart watches, and headphones should not be seen or used at any point during instructional time. This means no devices will be used during class periods.
For all students and families:
We understand that sometimes it is important to be able to reach your student during the day, and that sometimes students need to contact you during school hours. Every school is prepared and ready to help make those connections with dedicated team members who are committed to welcoming families as partners and ensuring safety and accessibility for students. Why is this important now?
Building healthy habits is important for us all – students and adults alike. Tulsa Public Schools believes that the responsible use of technology and social media are important skills that we can help develop in partnership with families. Research shows that having devices like cell phones and smart watches in the classroom can negatively impact academic outcomes and long-term learning retention. Recent studies have also shown that in real-world emergency situations, phones can be a dangerous distraction when students need to have their undivided attention focused on important instructions from adults and first responders.
