The predominant frequencies in speech are in the range of 100 Hz to 3000 Hz. Technically speaking, we say that speech has a frequency bandwidth of 2900 Hz.
Speech signals, i.e., signals intended to carry only human speech, can usually be sampled at a much lower rate. For most phonemes, almost all of the energy is contained in the 100 Hz – 4 kHz range, allowing a sampling rate of 8 kHz.
The half-power or 3-dB bandwidth is the width of the range of positive frequencies where a peak value at zero or infinite frequency (low-pass and high-pass signals) or at a center frequency (bandpass signals) is attenuated to 0.707 the value at the peak. The sampling frequency or sampling rate, fs, is the average number of samples obtained in one second, thus fs = 1/T. Its units are samples per second or hertz e.g. 48 kHz is 48,000 samples per second.
The bandwidth is half of the sampling frequency (Figure 7). The Nyquist sampling criterion requires setting the sampling rate at least twice the maximum frequency of interest. A bandwidth of 1000 Hertz means that the sampling frequency is set to 2000 samples/second.
For speech signals, the frequency range 300 Hz to 3100 Hz is considered adequate. Therefore speech signal requires a bandwidth of 2800 Hz (3100 Hz – 300 Hz) for commercial telephonic communication.
Bandwidth is the difference between the upper and lower frequencies in a continuous band of frequencies. It is typically measured in unit of hertz (symbol Hz).
A Female voice frequency range covers fairly upto 350 Hz to 17KHz. Its fundamental frequency is 350Hz to 3KHz and Harmonics is 3KHz to 17KHz. Male voice covers a Frequency range of 100Hz to 8KHz. The fundamental is 100Hz to 900Hz and Harmonics is 900Hz to 8KHz.
